9th Grade Regents English CLASSROOM RULES: · Bring books, notebooks, pens and pencils to class. · Sit in your seat and be working when the bell rings. · Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak. · Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. · Turn in completed assignments on time. (Benevolent Students Really Keep Trying) COURSE CONTENT: Students will study selected short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and drama (The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare) using The Prentice Hall Literature: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes Gold Level anthology. The novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens will be read and studied. The research unit will review the research thesis statement and introduction. Students will learn how to use note cards and write a bibliography using the MLA (Modern Language Association) format.. Lessons will incorporate components of the NYS Learning Standards to assist students with reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking. Mechanics include: grammar, journals, writing (creative, technical, homework, & essays), memorization, and vocabulary. ABSENCES: It is the student’s responsibility to get any missed work from the teacher. The student has one day for every day absent to complete the assignment or take the test/quiz. GRADING: Grades for my students will be based on participation, tests, quizzes, writing assignments, oral presentations, and projects. Grades will be weighted in accordance with the importance of the assignment. For example, quizzes will count one time and tests will count three times when I calculate the marking period average. MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR CLASS: · One 3-ring/2-inch binder, · Five dividers for the binder (vocabulary, plots, short stories/poetry, drama/novel, research). · One composition book (100 sheets; 9-3/4 x 7-1/2 in.). · One hundred 3” x 5” index ruled (with lines) cards. · Blue or black INK pen (All test must be taken in ink pen!). · Lined, loose-leaf notebook paper (NOT spiral). · One two-pocket (left & right) paper folder. |
